Sacramento do Chiado

The Chiado is one of the most diverse and sophisticated neighbourhoods in Portugal’s lively capital city. It is a popular destination for locals and visitors both by day and by night, as they come to shop in the boutiques, drink in the bars and cafes and dine in the many restaurants.

There is many a restaurant in Lisbon to choose from, but the Sacramento do Chiado Restaurant is one that is well worth adding to your list if you are here for a few days or more. Set in a former noble residence, the Valadares Palace, the building dates back to the 18th century when much of Lisbon was reconstructed following the devastating earthquake that shattered the city in 1755.

There are five dining rooms in total at the Sacramento do Chiado restaurant, each with its own distinctive atmosphere. Entering the gently lit dining areas with their vaulted ceilings is like taking a step back into the past, a journey through Portugal’s rich history – a journey soon to be complemented by some of the tastiest food of any such restaurant in Lisbon.

The food on offer at the Sacramento do Chiado Restaurant is traditional Portuguese with a modern twist. Guests can eat in the main restaurant or in the café and bar area, depending on the time of day and whether they are looking for a full meal, a light snack or something in between.

Tasty starters include prawns sautéed in olive oil and garlic, gazpacho, scrambled eggs with traditional Portuguese sausage, cod carpaccio and a variety of cheeses from all over Portugal.

For mains there is a choice of fish and seafood dishes such as cod with corn bread and turnip greens and some hearty meat offerings such as steak tartare.
