Por do Sol

The Por do Sol Restaurant is something of an institution, having been established for several decades in the delightful seaside town of Alvor, Portugal. If you are looking for a traditional Portuguese meal in traditional Portuguese surroundings, this is a good place to try. The restaurant itself is tucked away a little inland from the beach, to the rear of the old town of Alvor. The welcoming entrance opens into a light and airy dining room, comfortably furnished in traditional style, with decorative features in ceramic tile and lots of good quality carved dark wood to give the dining room a friendly, home from home feel.

The Por do Sol Restaurant is popular with families, with couples looking for a quiet restaurant to enjoy a romantic meal for two and with small to medium-sized groups. It is well known amongst the golfing fraternity as a favourite haunt to celebrate the final night of a week’s golfing, where presentations and prizes can be made in typical Portuguese surroundings.

Let the front of house manager, Candido, know before your arrival and he will save you the best group table in the house for your special evening. Candido and his team are super friendly and efficient, making for a very relaxing and enjoyable dining experience.

The menu has changed little in the several decades that the Por do Sol Restaurant has been in existence, but then as the motto says, if it isn’t broken, why fix it? This is the place to come to savour some of Portugal’s most traditional dishes and some Mediterranean classics with not a modern twist in sight. The onion soup is deliciously fragrant and makes a great starter as does the melon with Port wine, while the duck special is something of a favourite.

Other popular choices are the rack of lamb and the chateaubriand. Mains are served with a wide selection of vegetables on the side, perfect for the health conscious.

One of the highlights of a meal at this Alvor restaurant is the flambéed desserts. Crepe suzette and other flambéed specialities just beg to be sampled so make sure you leave room at the end of your meal to squeeze one in.

Expect to pay around sixty euros for a three-course meal for two with a good bottle of house red and if you are visiting in high season, pre-booking is highly recommended.
